Senior Parenting

I created the name "Senior Parenting" , or caring for aging parents to learn how to get involved in your parents wellbeing without putting yours at risk. Senior Parenting involves managing the safety, health, and finances of your parent or parents while balancing your own life. Key strategies include initiating open communication about care wishes, setting firm boundaries, organizing legal/financial plans (e.g., power of attorney), and prioritizing self-care to avoid burnout. www.caregiver.org +4Key Aspects of Caring for Aging Parents

  • Proactive Planning: Initiate conversations about finances, living situations, and medical wishes early, before a crisis happens via this YouTube video.
  • Safety Assessment: Monitor for signs that driving is unsafe, consider home safety improvements (fall prevention), and ensure legal documents like power of attorney are in place via this BSW Health blog post.
  • Set Boundaries: Establish what you can and cannot do to avoid becoming overwhelmed or losing your own identity.
  • Medical Management: Coordinate with doctors to understand changing needs, manage medications, and handle appointments.
  • Emotional Support: Allow parents to grieve losses in independence and be patient, as care roles can be stressful.
  • Utilize Resources: Seek support through family, friends, online communities, or professional care services. www.nia.nih.gov +8

Self-Care for the Caregiver
It is vital not to become a "martyr," as this is unsustainable for both you and your parents. Reach out to other family members for help, manage your stress early, and consider professional caregiver support for respite.
