Healthcare options fall into four distinct categories: livinginpanama.com . Local Health Insurance (Panama-Only)These are domestic plans that provide coverage strictly within Panama. They function similarly to an HMO or PPO network. 

• Providers: Top local carriers include ASSA, Blue Cross Blue Shield / Internacional de Seguros, MAPFRE, and Pan-American Life Insurance Group (PALIG). 
• Cost: Very affordable, typically ranging from $50 to $150 per month for healthy individuals in their 40s or 50s. 
• Key Limitations: Most local providers enforce a strict age limit for new sign-ups (often capping new policies at age 65 to 74). Additionally, pre-existing conditions are excluded entirely or require a mandatory 2-year waiting period before receiving partial (50%) coverage.

2. International Health InsuranceThese long-term plans cover you in Panama, your home country, and during global travel. 

• Providers: Popular choices include GeoBlue, Cigna Global, Bupa Global, and Worldwide Medical. 
• Cost: Significantly more expensive, averaging $200 to $400+ per month ($7,500–$8,000 annually) depending on age and whether U.S. coverage is included. 
• Benefits: They offer much higher lifetime coverage limits ($1M to $5M) and are far more flexible with underwriting pre-existing conditions. 
• Billing Warning: Many private hospitals require you to pay upfront and seek reimbursement later for international insurance, unless you use specific facilities like Hospital Chiriquí that accept certain U.S. networks directlly.

3. Private Hospital Membership PlansIf you are over the age limits or have severe pre-existing conditions that disqualify you from standard insurance, you can buy a discount membership plan directly.Panama 

• Hospital Santa Fe: Located in Panama City, Hospital Santa Fe offers its own senior health plan with no maximum age restriction.
• MiniMed Expat Membership: For routine care, MiniMed offers an Expat Health Membership for roughly $20 to $22 per month. It features unlimited doctor visits, heavily discounted lab work, and basic emergency room credits with no exclusions.

4. Public Healthcare (Pay-As-You-Go)Expats with valid residency cards can legally use the public healthcare facilities managed by MINSA (Ministry of Health) or CSS (Social Security Fund). There are no monthly premiums, no age caps, and no health exclusions. 

• Out-of-Pocket Costs: Standard doctor visits cost $2 to $3, specialists cost $5, and even major emergency surgeries rarely exceed a few hundred dollars out-of-pocket. 
• Downsides: Public hospitals suffer from long wait times, limited language accommodation (mostly Spanish), strict bureaucratic queues, and a lack of private rooms or top-tier amenities.
