After school outreach program

Hosted by:Genetta N. Staple, Program Coordinator

The After School Outreach program is a three-month program for children in the community of Río Abajo focusing on teaching children their Afro-Caribbean history, teaching them to speak, read, and write English. It also includes implementing discipline and the practice of mindful eating. The following is simplified focused program.

1. Education and Enrichment:

  • The After-school program: Provide a safe and structured environment for children to learn their history, English, do homework, and activities that will encourage critical thinking.
  • Tutoring: It is important that each child get the needed attention by connecting students with tutors for academic improvement and learning.  Tutors are selected based on their experiences with children and their ability to interact with children.
  • Heritage/History: It is important to educate the children about their history and who they are. This would help with their self-esteem and open up their curiosity in learning and embracing their culture. It includes occasional tour to historical sites.

2. Health and Wellness:

  • Nutrition education:  Mindful eating is part of the after school program. Teaching children and families about healthy eating habits can help improve their mental ability to learn and perform well at school.  There will be several occasions that children and adults will have the opportunity to participate in health seminars.
  • Overall Support:  The children's wellbeing and the type of support they receive from the community are the essential elements for a successful program. We are also attentive to any changes in a child's behavior. Any changes that affect learning, will be discussed with the parent first before suggesting speaking to qualified personnel.

3. Social Support and Community Involvement:

  • Community events: Organizing events that bring children and families together can foster a sense of belonging and create positive experiences.

4. Abuse prevention programs: Educating children and adults about  the different types of  abuse and how to recognize and report it.

The program is supported by donations and volunteers.
